Officially Made of Win- A Review of Firefly

Recently I had it pointed out to me that I was made of fail when it came to the awesome sci-fi show Firefly. This show was created by the mastermind behind Dr. Horrible’s Sing-A-Long Blog: Joss Whedon

In this space thriller the team is on a ship named Serenity that resembles a firefly (hence the name of the show). Now without giving away plot twists and too much of the serious awesomeness that is firefly I will just name a few of the basic characters and bits of greatness to impress upon everyone the superb quality of this show.

Captain Malcolm

We have Captain Malcolm Reynolds (For you Dr. Horrible fans this is also Captain Hammer Corporate Tool!!). Not too friendly with the law, Captain Reynolds gets his team into some unseemingly complicated situations.

His right hand man (well woman) is Zoe. Let me tell ya she is more man than most of the guys on my high school football team. She can hold her own and kick some major ass when necessary. With a long history between them Mal and Zoe trust each other to get the job done and watch the other’s back.

"The man they call Jayne"

Next in the “chain of command” would be Jayne (and don’t tell him thats a girls name). A guy always lookin for the big pay off, Jayne is shoot first, then again, and rather than ask questions- shoot some more. Crude and rugged, Jayne has a rough exterior…and well a rough interior, too 🙂

And who better to balance him out than the lovable Kaylee? With all manner of quirky talkin. Kaylee is sweet as can be with a gift with engines. Thats right this engineer could sure get you out of a pickle if ever you saw one. Why she could recalibrate the engine just as fast as you could spit. Sure is handy havin a girl like her on board out in the black like they usually are. Serenity speaks (figuratively) to Kaylee to let her know what she needs.

That’s just a peek at a few of the main characters that you’ll see within Firefly. Unfortunately now that I’ve got you all hyped up about the series I have to tell you… there is only one season (Dun Dun DUUUUUUUUN) i know, it’s heartbreaking. With continuously fluxuating time slots on there network Firefly was doomed from the get go no matter how good the material. However there is an upside… wait for it…. wait for it….. there’s a movie 🙂

Continuing where the season left off, the movie is a wrap up to the story lines that began in the series. Named after the ship, Serenity is Joss Whedon’s attempt to fix the network’s lack of vision. Though I would have loved to see all the seasons Whedon is rumored to have had rearing to go, the movie is a great effort and wonderfully done.

Wrap Up:Although these blu-rays are a bit grainy I give my overall Firefly experience 10 out of 10 Hershey Creme Pies!
