Man, Everybody's Leaving Saturday Night Live [Off Topic]

Man, Everybody's Leaving Saturday Night LiveSo many people are leaving SNL this year that people like Abby Elliott, who I feel like I’ve barely seen on the show, are also announcing their departures. Elliott will join two heavy hitters, Kristin Wiig and Andy Samberg, in leaving the show before its next season, and there are reports that “Weekend Update” anchor Seth Meyers might also leave.

SNL is, of course, always having turnover, and despite that fact it always manages to remain relevant. I remember when I was a kid and Sandler, Carvey, Farley, Nealon and Spade were on the show, everyone talked about how much worse it was than back when better people were doing it. But now, I think that era of the show (Better known as the “Van Down By The River Era”) was my favorite cast. Favorite Weekend Update anchor? Believe it or not, I think my favorite anchor was… Norm MacDonald. I know! I’m as surprised as anyone, but I think his newsdesk style has grown on me over the years.

How about you—what was the best era of Saturday Night Live? Who was the best Update host? Has the show ever been truly, consistently great, or has it always been a mixture of good and terrible skits? Do you think that Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip could have been a good show, had they actually captured some of what makes SNL so interesting?

Chat about that, or whatever else you like, here or over in the Talk Amongst Yourselves forum. Have good talking, and be nice to canteen boy. He can summon snakes, you know.
