How SEGA Saved PlayStation

Hard to believe, but back in the early 1990s, executives at Sony were debating the merits of 3D graphical technology against a more traditional sprite-based route. One of the issues was, of course, cost. The other was a sense of confusion about what 3D could achieve and how it might be received by the gaming public.

Turns out, the debate was a long way from being resolved, until the Sony team saw an arcade game from its established console-biz rival SEGA. The game was Virtua Fighter. From that moment, 3D was always going to win.
