The 12 Big Games Missing From E3 2014

By Marty Sliva and Mitch Dyer

E3 2014 was filled with dozens of amazing games spread across pretty much every platform under the sun. But alongside those were the notable absence of a lot of high-profile games that we’ve seen or heard from in some prior capacity.
NOTE: Before you hop in the comments and start yelling about Red Dead Redemption 2, Half-Life 3, Fallout 4, or Metroid: Whatever, keep in mind that we didn’t include games that don’t officially exist yet. Those games are undoubtedly in development, but without official reveals, we decided not to use them for this feature. Same goes for things like Kingdom Hearts 3, Final Fantasy XV, Quantum Break, and Media Molecule’s next game, all of which we knew weren’t going to be at E3 before the show even started.
And with that, here are the 12 games that were M.I.A. at E3 2014.

Halo 5: Guardians

‘);
}
};

// only use the determined w/h if non-zero; helps with divs that start hidden
if (jQuery(‘#’+videoDomId).width() + jQuery(‘#’+videoDomId).height() == 0) {
swfobject.embedSWF(url, videoDomId, videoDim.width.toString(), videoDim.height.toString(), swfVersionStr, xiSwfUrlStr, flashvars, params, attributes, swfObjectCallback);
} else {
swfobject.embedSWF(url, videoDomId, jQuery(‘#’+videoDomId).width().toString(), jQuery(‘#’+videoDomId).height().toString(), swfVersionStr, xiSwfUrlStr, flashvars, params, attributes, swfObjectCallback);
}

}).find(“a”).click(function(e) {
window.open(jQuery(this).attr(“href”), “_parent”);
return false;
});

Although we saw a nice tease at the tail end of 343’s Master Chief Collection announcement — along with the reveal of a December 2014 beta — we never really saw Halo 5: Guardians.
Microsoft will no doubt feature it as its biggest, strongest exclusive at E3 2015, but we’re left equally confused as we were last year in terms of what Master Chief’s next story is about. Given The Master Chief Collection’s narrative ties to Halo 5, though, we’ll no doubt learn a little bit about what’s to come before next June’s coming-out party.

Rime

‘);
}
};

// only use the determined w/h if non-zero; helps with divs that start hidden
if (jQuery(‘#’+videoDomId).width() + jQuery(‘#’+videoDomId).height() == 0) {
swfobject.embedSWF(url, videoDomId, videoDim.width.toString(), videoDim.height.toString(), swfVersionStr, xiSwfUrlStr, flashvars, params, attributes, swfObjectCallback);
} else {
swfobject.embedSWF(url, videoDomId, jQuery(‘#’+videoDomId).width().toString(), jQuery(‘#’+videoDomId).height().toString(), swfVersionStr, xiSwfUrlStr, flashvars, params, attributes, swfObjectCallback);
}

}).find(“a”).click(function(e) {
window.open(jQuery(this).attr(“href”), “_parent”);
return false;
});

Rime floored us when it was first revealed at Gamescom 2013. The atmospheric PS4-exclusive pulled inspiration from Wind Waker, Ico, Journey, and Princess Mononoke, which pretty much sounds like the best thing ever. Flash forward almost one year, and we haven’t heard much about the project since.
Developer Tequila Works, whose previous game Deadlight was one of the strongest indies near the end of XBLA’s life cycle, promises that the game’s story will be told through the environment and animation, as opposed to direct dialogue and narration. Though we’re still eager to know more about Rime, we’re willing to give Tequila Works as much time as they need if it means a game comparable to its inspirations. As we near the one-year anniversary of the game’s German reveal, could we be getting our next glimpse of Rime at Gamescom in August?

Beyond Good & Evil 2

‘);
}
};

// only use the determined w/h if non-zero; helps with divs that start hidden
if (jQuery(‘#’+videoDomId).width() + jQuery(‘#’+videoDomId).height() == 0) {
swfobject.embedSWF(url, videoDomId, videoDim.width.toString(), videoDim.height.toString(), swfVersionStr, xiSwfUrlStr, flashvars, params, attributes, swfObjectCallback);
} else {
swfobject.embedSWF(url, videoDomId, jQuery(‘#’+videoDomId).width().toString(), jQuery(‘#’+videoDomId).height().toString(), swfVersionStr, xiSwfUrlStr, flashvars, params, attributes, swfObjectCallback);
}

}).find(“a”).click(function(e) {
window.open(jQuery(this).attr(“href”), “_parent”);
return false;
});

Years after Ubisoft showed Jade and Pey’j loitering in a desert, and years after various concept art and videos have leaked out of Ubisoft, Beyond Good & Evil 2 remains as much a mystery in 2014 as it ever has. Creator Michel Ancel maintains that his team has some semblance of involvement in a new Beyond Good & Evil project, but whether that has anything to do with what was once shown is as uncertain as it ever was. E3 2014 provided little to no guidance. At least Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot maintains the series isn’t going away — it’d just be nice to see it sooner than later.

Persona 5

‘);
}
};

// only use the determined w/h if non-zero; helps with divs that start hidden
if (jQuery(‘#’+videoDomId).width() + jQuery(‘#’+videoDomId).height() == 0) {
swfobject.embedSWF(url, videoDomId, videoDim.width.toString(), videoDim.height.toString(), swfVersionStr, xiSwfUrlStr, flashvars, params, attributes, swfObjectCallback);
} else {
swfobject.embedSWF(url, videoDomId, jQuery(‘#’+videoDomId).width().toString(), jQuery(‘#’+videoDomId).height().toString(), swfVersionStr, xiSwfUrlStr, flashvars, params, attributes, swfObjectCallback);
}

}).find(“a”).click(function(e) {
window.open(jQuery(this).attr(“href”), “_parent”);
return false;
});

Atlus had every Persona project except Persona 5 on display at E3 2014, likely because Persona 5 will make its debut at this year’s Tokyo Game Show. We know next to nothing about the PlayStation 3 exclusive, but it would have been nice to see a greater representation of Japanese-developed games during Sony’s press conference, which was dominated by western titles. Persona 5 releases in 2015, so expect to learn more soon.

Fortnite

‘);
}
};

// only use the determined w/h if non-zero; helps with divs that start hidden
if (jQuery(‘#’+videoDomId).width() + jQuery(‘#’+videoDomId).height() == 0) {
swfobject.embedSWF(url, videoDomId, videoDim.width.toString(), videoDim.height.toString(), swfVersionStr, xiSwfUrlStr, flashvars, params, attributes, swfObjectCallback);
} else {
swfobject.embedSWF(url, videoDomId, jQuery(‘#’+videoDomId).width().toString(), jQuery(‘#’+videoDomId).height().toString(), swfVersionStr, xiSwfUrlStr, flashvars, params, attributes, swfObjectCallback);
}

}).find(“a”).click(function(e) {
window.open(jQuery(this).attr(“href”), “_parent”);
return false;
});

We’ve known about Epic’s sandbox, co-op, survival action game since details first emerged at Comic-Con 2012, and after quite a long silence in the middle there, we’re finally uncovering more and more information about the project. In April, Epic revealed that the game would be free-to-play, and that they were already recruiting folks for alpha testing.
As of right now, the game is still a PC-exclusive, which would explain its absence from the console-centric shenanigans of E3. Of all the games on this list, we’re willing to bet that Fortnite is one of the first we end up actually getting our hands on.

Quantic Dream’s PS4 Project

‘);
}
};

// only use the determined w/h if non-zero; helps with divs that start hidden
if (jQuery(‘#’+videoDomId).width() + jQuery(‘#’+videoDomId).height() == 0) {
swfobject.embedSWF(url, videoDomId, videoDim.width.toString(), videoDim.height.toString(), swfVersionStr, xiSwfUrlStr, flashvars, params, attributes, swfObjectCallback);
} else {
swfobject.embedSWF(url, videoDomId, jQuery(‘#’+videoDomId).width().toString(), jQuery(‘#’+videoDomId).height().toString(), swfVersionStr, xiSwfUrlStr, flashvars, params, attributes, swfObjectCallback);
}

}).find(“a”).click(function(e) {
window.open(jQuery(this).attr(“href”), “_parent”);
return false;
});

Though we don’t know a whole lot about Quantic Dream’s followup to Beyond Two Souls, our two glimpses at the tech behind it might give us some clues. Originally revealed at the February 2013 PlayStation 4 reveal event, David Cage’s demo showcased a model of an old man’s face going through a series of complex emotions, reactions, and contortions. The tech behind Quantic Dream’s games seem to keep inching towards the cinematic realism that Cage has been grasping for throughout his whole career.
We got to see an extended version of the demo at E3 2013, but this time “The Dark Sorcerer” took a decidedly comedic turn as the character onscreen had quite a difficult time getting through his scene without breaking down. Sadly, hopes of seeing a next-gen comedy were dashed when there wasn’t a peep from Quantic Dream’s project at this year’s E3. Perhaps we’ll hear more from the French studio at Gamescom in August.

Mad Max

‘);
}
};

// only use the determined w/h if non-zero; helps with divs that start hidden
if (jQuery(‘#’+videoDomId).width() + jQuery(‘#’+videoDomId).height() == 0) {
swfobject.embedSWF(url, videoDomId, videoDim.width.toString(), videoDim.height.toString(), swfVersionStr, xiSwfUrlStr, flashvars, params, attributes, swfObjectCallback);
} else {
swfobject.embedSWF(url, videoDomId, jQuery(‘#’+videoDomId).width().toString(), jQuery(‘#’+videoDomId).height().toString(), swfVersionStr, xiSwfUrlStr, flashvars, params, attributes, swfObjectCallback);
}

}).find(“a”).click(function(e) {
window.open(jQuery(this).attr(“href”), “_parent”);
return false;
});

Just Cause developer Avalanche has been quiet about Mad Max since its debut in 2013, and its absence at this year’s E3 didn’t go unnoticed. Publisher WB also had Mortal Kombat X, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, Batman: Arkham Knight, and Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor at its booth. Maybe WB just didn’t have space for another AAA game. With any luck, this means Mad Max is getting the attention it needs to make the journey from “good” to “great,” and to hopefully implement some feedback left by concerned attendees and fans when the game was first featured.

Cyberpunk 2077

‘);
}
};

// only use the determined w/h if non-zero; helps with divs that start hidden
if (jQuery(‘#’+videoDomId).width() + jQuery(‘#’+videoDomId).height() == 0) {
swfobject.embedSWF(url, videoDomId, videoDim.width.toString(), videoDim.height.toString(), swfVersionStr, xiSwfUrlStr, flashvars, params, attributes, swfObjectCallback);
} else {
swfobject.embedSWF(url, videoDomId, jQuery(‘#’+videoDomId).width().toString(), jQuery(‘#’+videoDomId).height().toString(), swfVersionStr, xiSwfUrlStr, flashvars, params, attributes, swfObjectCallback);
}

}).find(“a”).click(function(e) {
window.open(jQuery(this).attr(“href”), “_parent”);
return false;
});

In early 2013, Witcher developer CD Project Red released an incredible first teaser for Cyberpunk 2077. The gorgeous tone-piece gave us a brief glimpse at what to expect from the Polish studio’s foray into science fiction. Flash forward 18 months, and we still don’t know a whole lot more about the project since its reveal.
CD Project stated that Cyberpunk would most likely be on new-gen platforms (almost a given now), that it wouldn’t be released until at least 2015 (highly unlikely it’ll hit that mark), and that the delay of The Witcher 3 hasn’t disrupted development of 2077. Though we could see more of it at Gamescom in August, the safe bet is that CD Project Red waits until Witcher is out the door in February, then makes a big splash with Cyberpunk 2077 at E3 2015.

Until Dawn

‘);
}
};

// only use the determined w/h if non-zero; helps with divs that start hidden
if (jQuery(‘#’+videoDomId).width() + jQuery(‘#’+videoDomId).height() == 0) {
swfobject.embedSWF(url, videoDomId, videoDim.width.toString(), videoDim.height.toString(), swfVersionStr, xiSwfUrlStr, flashvars, params, attributes, swfObjectCallback);
} else {
swfobject.embedSWF(url, videoDomId, jQuery(‘#’+videoDomId).width().toString(), jQuery(‘#’+videoDomId).height().toString(), swfVersionStr, xiSwfUrlStr, flashvars, params, attributes, swfObjectCallback);
}

}).find(“a”).click(function(e) {
window.open(jQuery(this).attr(“href”), “_parent”);
return false;
});

Originally revealed in Germany at Gamescom 2012, Supermassive’s Sony-exclusive horror game pulled heavily from the revered shlock of ‘80s slasher flicks like Friday the 13th. We were impressed with our first two looks at Until Dawn, but haven’t heard much about the project since then. Thankfully, fears of the game being shelved were put to rest after sources told IGN that the project was “still very much in development.”
With the transition into the new generation of consoles, rumors popped up that the game was now being developed for PlayStation 4 instead of 3. Sony’s Shuhei Yoshida also recently commented on how Project Morpheus’ VR technology would make a good pairing with the horror game. Given Sony’s growing interest in Gamescom and the fact that Supermassive is a European studio, our bet is that we see more of Until Dawn in Germany this August.

Bravely Second

‘);
}
};

// only use the determined w/h if non-zero; helps with divs that start hidden
if (jQuery(‘#’+videoDomId).width() + jQuery(‘#’+videoDomId).height() == 0) {
swfobject.embedSWF(url, videoDomId, videoDim.width.toString(), videoDim.height.toString(), swfVersionStr, xiSwfUrlStr, flashvars, params, attributes, swfObjectCallback);
} else {
swfobject.embedSWF(url, videoDomId, jQuery(‘#’+videoDomId).width().toString(), jQuery(‘#’+videoDomId).height().toString(), swfVersionStr, xiSwfUrlStr, flashvars, params, attributes, swfObjectCallback);
}

}).find(“a”).click(function(e) {
window.open(jQuery(this).attr(“href”), “_parent”);
return false;
});

It goes without saying that we love Bravely Default. It’s one of the best 3DS games of the year, and injects so much energy and innovation into the standard JRPG formula that Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest laid down so many decades ago. Suffice it to say, we’re craving more.
We know that Silicon Studio and Square Enix are working on a follow-up called Bravely Second, and that it will take place many years after the original, but still set in the same world. We were hoping for more at E3, but details were sadly missing at the big show. Given the Japanese-centric nature of the game, we expect to see more of the JRPG sequel at Tokyo Game Show in September.

Deus Ex Universe

‘);
}
};

// only use the determined w/h if non-zero; helps with divs that start hidden
if (jQuery(‘#’+videoDomId).width() + jQuery(‘#’+videoDomId).height() == 0) {
swfobject.embedSWF(url, videoDomId, videoDim.width.toString(), videoDim.height.toString(), swfVersionStr, xiSwfUrlStr, flashvars, params, attributes, swfObjectCallback);
} else {
swfobject.embedSWF(url, videoDomId, jQuery(‘#’+videoDomId).width().toString(), jQuery(‘#’+videoDomId).height().toString(), swfVersionStr, xiSwfUrlStr, flashvars, params, attributes, swfObjectCallback);
}

}).find(“a”).click(function(e) {
window.open(jQuery(this).attr(“href”), “_parent”);
return false;
});

Eidos Montreal’s new, next-gen sequel to Deus Ex: Human Revolution has been teased here and there, but we know very little about Deus Ex Universe. With Square holding back on Kingdom Hearts, Final Fantasy, and Tomb Raider gameplay demos, a Deus Ex demo could have gone a long way — but, like the rest of its lineup, its seems Square Enix will come out swinging in 2015 (or sooner, if we’re lucky at Gamescom) with a new Deus Ex.

The Last Guardian

‘);
}
};

// only use the determined w/h if non-zero; helps with divs that start hidden
if (jQuery(‘#’+videoDomId).width() + jQuery(‘#’+videoDomId).height() == 0) {
swfobject.embedSWF(url, videoDomId, videoDim.width.toString(), videoDim.height.toString(), swfVersionStr, xiSwfUrlStr, flashvars, params, attributes, swfObjectCallback);
} else {
swfobject.embedSWF(url, videoDomId, jQuery(‘#’+videoDomId).width().toString(), jQuery(‘#’+videoDomId).height().toString(), swfVersionStr, xiSwfUrlStr, flashvars, params, attributes, swfObjectCallback);
}

window.open(jQuery(this).attr(“href”), “_parent”);
return false;
});

Of course, we’ll close with the White Whale of E3. Team ICO’s much-anticipated followup to Shadow of the Colossus has been the game we’ve all been wanting to see at pretty much every major show over the past five years. Studio departures and long stretches of silence contributed to reports of the game being canceled prior to E3, but Sony was quick to refute those, and stated that development is still moving along.
Honestly, we don’t know when we’ll finally get our hands on The Last Guardian. All of us are hoping for Gamescom or TGS, but we’ve been disappointed far too many times to really get our hopes up too high. But I guess that’s the magic of a White Whale.

So those were the 12 big games that were notably absent from this year’s E3. Which M.I.A. games stood out to you the most?
