The LEGO Movie

Release Date: Tuesday, June 17, 2014
From our Review: On paper, the title might sound a little crass. A film based entirely around a product? You could even be forgiven for being cynical, seeing the use of a toy brand as little more than a ruse to flog even more play-sets. You could think that, but you’d be so wrong and end up missing out on a truly wonderful film.
The LEGO Movie is a lot of things, but cynical is definitely not one of them. It’s positively teeming with life and energy. It’s bizarre, colourful, optimistic, frequently hilarious, and perhaps most surprisingly, genuinely touching. Like the most celebrated of kids’ films, though, The LEGO Movie is really about what it means to be a child, and therefore, it has a much wider audience: everyone.

The Grand Budapest Hotel

Release Date: Tuesday, June 17, 2014
From our Review: Wes Anderson may well have the most distinctive directorial voice in modern American cinema. The style is so unmistakable – from visuals and music to dialogue and performance – that an Anderson film pretty much identifies itself in the first few frames.
But it’s his latest effort that feels like the ultimate Wes Anderson movie, with The Grand Budapest Hotel clearly made by a director at the height of his powers, taking everything he’s learned thus far and applying it to a magical, moving and utterly beguiling shaggy dog story.

EA Sports UFC

Release Date: Tuesday, June 17, 2014
From our Preview: MMA is a sport with a lot more to it than even a bulk of its fans realize. What the layman sees is two people savagely beating on one another, and sure, there’s a certain base-level barbaric thrill to that. But anyone who pays closer attention knows that it’s all a lot more complex, especially when the fight goes to the ground. Even my favorite MMA games over the years have failed to make the ground element anything more interesting than a collection of button-mashing mini-games, but after a recent hands-on, EA Sports UFC looks like it’s bucking the trend.

Pushmo World

Release Date: Thursday, June 19, 2014
See it in the Nintendo eShop for $9.99 (Wii U)
From our Review: Pushmo, perhaps the first breakout hit on the 3DS eShop, finally comes to the Wii U with Pushmo World. Though a lack of substantial new ideas makes it feel more like version 1.5 instead of a true sequel, scaling the puzzle monoliths in Pushmo World is still equally challenging and fun. Plus, with a much more convenient way to share custom puzzles, there is no shortage of ways to make your brain hurt.

Divinity: Original Sin

Release Date: Friday, June 20, 2014
From our Preview: Looking at Original Sin, the latest in the Divinity series, you might be excused a sense of deja vu rudely leering over your shoulder. It’s an isometric RPG, turn-based, and cooperative. If the names of a dozen different games are flying thick and fast across your mind’s eye right now, that’s OK. This is the part where I show you how this isn’t quite how you might think. For one thing, it’s properly co-operative.
Larian Studios has come full circle. Ten years gone, and it’s managed to go from a fledgling indie developer struggling to get a publisher to invest in their project to believing that a publisher isn’t even necessary any more. With Divinity: Original Sin, the studio is doing away with all the restrictions that kept it from making the game that it always wanted to make, and getting it right.
