Why Pulp Fiction Was So Cool

When I saw Pulp Fiction, I was 14. It was the coolest thing I had seen in my entire life.

Since that day, I’ve seen the move probably a dozen times. Each time, I have more of an appreciation for the craft behind it. And so I loved this video essay, which went up at Press Play over the weekend. Written and edited by Peter Labuza and Matt Zoller Seitz, it takes a look at how the movie is cool, how Quentin Tarantino builds up his own characters’ mythology before challenging and tearing them down. Awesome.

This sort of makes me want to do a Tarantino marathon—it’s been far too long, for example, since I last saw Jackie Brown.

Are you a fan of Tarantino’s work? Are you looking forward to his new one? Do you think there’s a point at which he started making bad movies? Do you think he’ll ever win Best Director or Best Picture?

Feel free to discuss Tarantino, or anything else, here or over in the Talk Amongst Yourselves forum. Have good chatting, and don’t forget what Marcellus Wallace looks like.
